Bill Aimed at Spice Bath Salts

The U.S. Senate has passed a bill targeting the sale of synthetic marijuana and the chemicals found in bath salts. The legislation would close loopholes that have allowed makers of these drugs to circumvent local and state bans against their sale.

The federal law would also prevent buyers from crossing local and state jurisdictional lines to purchase the drugs.

Misuse of Prescription Drugs Is Illegal

Many teens today have been told by their peers that, unlike underage drinking and marijuana use, using and sharing prescription drugs is legal. But the truth is just because you get them out of your mother's medicine cabinet, doesn't make it legal to use, carry or give away those pain pills. Read more...

Smoking Weed Doubles Car Crash Risk

Drivers who smoke marijuana within three hours of getting behind the wheel are much more likely to get into a serious vehicle crash than drivers who are not under the influence of either drugs or alcohol. A study of almost 50,000 vehicular collisions found that smoking weed is almost as dangerous as driving with an blood alcohol concentration of 0.08.

The findings were the result of reviewing ten separate research studies on the effects of marijuana in 49,411 auto collisions.

Prom Night Tips to Protect Yourself

Prom night can be one of the social highlights of your high school years, but it can also be the most dangerous. School officials and parents can only do so much to make the event safe, it's up to you to make the choices that will keep you safe and get you home unharmed.

The decisions that you make between now and the end of the school year could affect the rest of your life.

Former Oxy Users Switching to Heroin

When the manufacturers of the powerful painkiller OxyContin changed its formula in 2010 to make the drug more difficult to abuse, they had no idea the move would kick off a huge surge in the use of heroin throughout the United States. While abuse of OxyContin has significantly decreased in the past two years, the use of heroin has almost doubled.

Law enforcement agencies are finding large amounts of heroin in areas where previously it was never much of a problem.

Safety Warning Issued for Pain Patches

Pain patients who use prescription pain patches and also have small children in the home need to take special precautions to prevent possible illness and death. As a result of reports of children becoming seriously ill or dying from accidental exposure to skin patches containing the pain reliever fentanyl, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a safety alert. Most of the accidental exposures have involved children less than two years old.

The FDA alert warns patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals about the proper storage and disposal of fentanyl patches.

Mixed Results in Annual Drug Survey

The annual Monitoring the Future survey brought mixed results for parents and health officials concerned about preventing youth substance abuse. Alcohol and cigarette use is at a historic low among 8th, 10th and 12th graders, but marijuana and prescription drug use has increased.

Cigarette smoking has declined, but use of alternate tobacco products remains at high levels.

No Alcohol Level Safe for Driving

We have known for a long time that alcohol consumption at a level lower than the legal limit for being under the influence can impair a driver's abilities. Now a massive study of fatal traffic crashes has found that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption for drivers.

Auto crashes produce more severe injuries even when drivers have only trace amounts of alcohol in their systems.

Heavy Marijuana Use by Teens Surges

The 23rd Partnership Attitude Tracking Study (PATS) is out and it's not good news for parents who hope their children make it through high school without doing drugs. The latest survey indicates that smoking weed is becoming more acceptable behavior among teens and heavy marijuana use is now at disturbingly high levels.

Heavy use of marijuana - smoking 20 or more times a month - has increased 80 percent since 2008, the study shows.

Alcohol Awareness Keeping Prom Night Safe

One of the reasons Alcohol Awareness Month is held in April is because it is the beginning of the prom and graduation season, a time when celebrations can turn dangerous for underage drinkers. Many communities conduct anti-drinking campaigns during the month aimed at curtailing alcohol use before, during and after the special events.

235 Million Americans in Recovery

Perhaps for the first time, we may have an accurate estimate of how many people in the United States are currently in recovery for an alcohol or drug problem. A national survey conducted by the Partnership at DrugFree.org and New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) indicates that 10 percent of all adults over age 18 in the U.S. consider themselves to be in recovery.

That means an estimated 23.5 million Americans have found sustained recovery from involvement with drugs and alcohol that they once considered problematic.

This week, Feb. 12-18, 2012 marks the National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACoA) observance of Children of Alcoholics week to celebrate the recovery of children of all ages who have found recovery from the loss and pain experienced in their childhood. This year's theme is "A Celebration of Hope and Healing" which offers hope for those who are sill adversely impacted by parental alcohol or drug addiction.

The observance of Children of Alcoholics Week is important because the NACoA estimates that 25% of all children in the United States are affected by or exposed to a family alcohol or drug problem.

Those effects can include physical illness, emotional disturbances, behavior problems, lower educational performance, and susceptibility to alcoholism or other addiction later in life, the NACoA says.
