Alcohol Awareness Is For All Ages

Many of the efforts associated with Alcohol Awareness Month each April are targeted at preventing underage drinking, especially during the prom and graduation celebration season. But there are other groups that are also practicing harmful alcohol consumption but may not be aware of the risks.

Prevention efforts have been increased around prom night events and graduation parties since the first Alcohol Awareness Month in 1987, but prevention efforts are also targeted at the following demographic groups.

    Pregnant Women
Women who continue to drink throughout their pregnancies are putting the health of their babies at risk for developing a wide range of fetal alcohol syndrome disorders.

    Senior Citizens
Older adults who drink out of loneliness or boredom are increasing in numbers. It's a growing problem not always detected by healthcare providers.

    Professionals
Professionals and other highly educated, white-collar workers who have a drink to unwind after a long day could be drinking at harmful levels and not realize it.

    College Students
Since many college students have the idea that "everybody does it," they may not understand just how risky their pattern of binge drinking and partying really is.
